The short version
Go Soccer Gear ("GSG") collects only what it needs to connect families for gear exchanges: your email, a display name, an optional phone number, and a zip code (used to estimate distance, not to pinpoint your address). We don't sell your data, we don't run ads, and we don't use third-party ad-tracking cookies.
1. Information you give us
- Account info: email address, password (stored as a one-way hash, never in plain text), display name, and optionally a phone number and zip code.
- Location: if you provide a zip code, we convert it to an approximate latitude/longitude so we can estimate distance between listings and browsers - we don't collect or store a precise street address.
- Listings: item details (category, brand, size, gender, color, condition, description), photos you upload, and the zip code for that listing.
- Requests and messages: exchange requests, your preferred exchange method (shipping, drop-off, pickup, or meetup), and any notes you include.
- Reviews: ratings and comments you leave about a completed exchange.
- Anything you send us directly through the contact or report pages.
2. Information collected automatically
When you visit the site, we log the page path and referring page against a one-way, salted hash generated for that visit - not your raw IP address or any other identifying detail - so we can see rough traffic and usage patterns. This is first-party, self-hosted analytics; we do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, ad networks, or any other third-party tracker.
3. Cookies and local storage
GSG doesn't use tracking or advertising cookies. When you sign in, your session token and basic account info are stored in your browser's local storage (not a cookie) so you stay signed in between visits - this data stays on your device and is used only to talk to our own servers. 4. How we use your information
- To create and manage your account and listings.
- To match nearby families and estimate distance between a listing and a browsing family.
- To send transactional emails you'd expect - account verification, password resets, listing status updates, new exchange requests, and similar notifications.
- To review listings for accuracy and moderate the marketplace.
- To respond to support requests and reports.
- To understand overall site usage so we can improve it.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers or data brokers.
5. Who can see what
- Your display name, listings, and public review history are visible to other users of the site.
- Your email address and exact phone number are not shown publicly - they're used for account access and, where you provide a phone number, potential exchange coordination.
- When you request or receive gear, the other party can message you through the site to coordinate the hand-off.
6. Children's privacy
GSG is intended for use by adults on behalf of their families - it is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. Listings describe gear used by children, but accounts are meant to be created and managed by a parent or guardian.
7. Data storage and security
Data is stored on our hosting provider's servers. Passwords are hashed (never stored in plain text), and account access uses token-based authentication. No online system can be guaranteed 100% secure, but we take reasonable, industry-standard steps to protect your information.
8. Third-party services we use
- Web fonts: we load typefaces from Google Fonts, which may log basic request data (like your IP address) per Google's own privacy practices.
- Email delivery: transactional emails (verification, password resets, notifications) are sent through our hosting provider's SMTP service.
- Hosting: the site and its database are hosted on a standard web hosting provider.
9. Your choices
- You can update your account details, phone number, and zip code at any time from your account page.
- You can remove a listing at any time.
- To request a copy of your data or full account deletion, contact us through the contact page - we'll handle it directly since this is a small, hands-on project rather than an automated self-serve system.

If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be reflected here as soon as they're made.
